Exterior cladding is the least forgiving tiling job in the country. A facade in India can swing through a 30-degree temperature range in a single day, sit in direct sun for eight hours, take the full force of monsoon rain, then repeat the cycle for years. Everything expands and contracts, and the tile, the adhesive and the wall behind it all move at different rates. Unlike an indoor floor, a failure here is not a cosmetic complaint. A stone panel coming loose from a first-floor elevation is a safety incident. That is why exterior work needs a deliberately different approach: a deformable adhesive, a substrate that has been genuinely prepared, joints designed to move, and a grout that keeps water out of the system. Why exterior cladding fails

Look at any failed facade and you will usually find one of five causes. Thermal cycling has fatigued a rigid adhesive until the bond fractured. Water has entered through open or cracked joints, sat behind the tile and pushed it off. The wall was tiled before the plaster had cured. The tile was low porosity and was fixed with an adhesive that relied on suction it never got. Or there were no movement joints, so an expanding field of tile had nowhere to go.

None of these are exotic problems. All are avoidable at the specification stage.

Choosing the adhesive for an exterior wall

The property that matters most outdoors is deformability: the ability of the cured adhesive to flex slightly and absorb differential movement instead of cracking. In the ISO 13007 code, that shows up as S1 or S2 at the end, with S2 being the more deformable. Slip resistance, marked T, matters just as much, because you are working vertically and the tile must not creep while the wall sets.

For exterior wall tiles and cladding, the practical choices in the Gresbond range are:

Preparing the substrate

Exterior preparation is stricter than interior work, because the wall is tested by weather every day.

Allow plaster and concrete to cure fully. Remove all traces of formwork oil, curing compound, laitance, dust and any old paint or coating. Repair cracks, honeycombing and hollow patches in the plaster first, since a hollow area behind cladding will always be the point where failure starts. Confirm that any waterproofing or render system beneath the tile is complete and compatible with the adhesive. Finally, check the wall for plumb and flatness, because you cannot pack out an out-of-plumb facade with extra adhesive.

Joints and movement

Joint design is what keeps a facade alive over the years.

Keep joint widths generous enough to absorb expansion. Butt-jointed cladding on an exterior wall leaves no tolerance at all. Plan movement joints at floor levels, at changes of substrate, at internal corners, and to break large uninterrupted areas into panels. Use tile spacers so widths stay consistent across a whole elevation.

For the joint filler itself, mixing a cement grout with the KGA-01 polymer admix instead of water gives a denser, more colourfast joint and helps block moisture seeping in behind the tile. Weight, height and safety

Before any fixing starts, check that the substrate itself is strong enough to carry the weight of the covering. A wall that cannot take the load will fail whatever adhesive is used on it, and no product can compensate for a weak or hollow background.

Adhesive fixing also has practical limits of its own. As panels get larger and heavier, and as the fixing height increases, the installation may need mechanical support such as anchors or fasteners working alongside the adhesive. That is a structural decision. Consult the site engineer and follow the project specification rather than settling it on site, and never scale up tile size or panel weight without rechecking the fixing method.
