Fixing Marble and Natural Stone: Why Standard Adhesive Fails

Why natural stone needs a different adhesive from ceramic tile, how discolouration happens, and which grade and method to use for marble work.
Natural stone is the most expensive material most tiling jobs will handle and the one most likely to be fixed with whatever adhesive was already on site. That is an expensive habit. Stone behaves nothing like a ceramic tile. It is porous in ways that vary from slab to slab, it is often translucent enough that whatever sits behind it shows through, it is sensitive to moisture moving through the bed, and some of it arrives with a mesh backing that changes the fixing method entirely. A grey general-purpose adhesive under a light marble can produce patchy grey shadows within weeks, and there is no cleaning product that reverses it. This guide covers what actually goes wrong with stone and how to fix marble, granite and other natural stone properly.
Key Takeaways
Natural stone is porous and often translucent, so the adhesive behind it can show through the face.
Use a white adhesive under marble and light-coloured stone to prevent discolouration.
VX-2 is the white, polymer-modified grade for low-porosity tiles and natural stone, confirming to IS 15477:2019 Type 2T.
VX-2 is not suitable for mesh-backed tiles and stones, and not for direct use on gypsum plaster, paint or metal.
Full bed contact matters more with stone than with tile, because voids show as shadows and cause cracking.
Clean and maintain stone with a non-acidic cleaner only.
Why stone is a different problem
Three properties set natural stone apart.
Porosity. Stone draws moisture in. Moisture carried through the adhesive bed can migrate to the face and leave marks or a bloom that appears days after the job is finished.
Translucency. Marble and many pale stones let light through the slab. Anything sitting behind them, including a grey cement bed, influences the colour you see.
Variation. Two slabs from the same quarry behave differently. Stone is not a manufactured product with consistent absorption, so the fixing method has to have a margin built in.
The discolouration problem
This is the failure people actually call about. A light marble floor is fixed with a standard grey adhesive and within a few weeks the surface shows uneven grey patching, usually darkest where the bed was thickest or where trowel ridges did not fully collapse.
The reason is straightforward. Grey cement under a translucent stone reads through the slab, and it reads unevenly because the bed is not perfectly uniform.
A white cement-based adhesive removes the cause. VX-2 is a high-performance, polymer-modified, white cement-based adhesive made for low-porosity tiles and natural stones, and one of its stated purposes is protecting light-base tiles and marble from discolouration.
Which grade, and where it can be used
VX-2 is rated for interior and exterior floors and interior walls, and is suitable for showers, wet areas and swimming pools. It confirms to IS 15477:2019 Type 2T and to EN 12004 / ISO 13007 as a C2TE adhesive, meaning improved cementitious performance with slip resistance and extended open time. It can be used up to a 12 mm bed.
Approved substrates include concrete, masonry, existing tiles, terraces, roughened cement terrazzo and existing natural stone that has been cleaned and roughened.
Two limitations matter and are easy to miss:
• Not suitable for tiles and stones with mesh backing. Mesh-backed stone and mosaic sheets need a fixing method suited to the backing material, so check the slab before you order.
• Not recommended for direct use on gypsum plaster, paint or metal. Those substrates need to be removed or changed, not tiled over.
Compare grades on the tile adhesives page or run your job through the tile adhesive selector.
Getting the bed right
With stone, a void is not just a hollow spot. It is a visible shadow and a weak point under a heavy, brittle slab.
Clean all dust, water, oil and sealers off the substrate first. Spread with the flat side of the trowel, then comb with the notched side. Once the stone is larger than 12 x 12 inches, apply adhesive to the back of the slab as well. Press into position with a twisting action so the ridges collapse, then tap gently with a rubber mallet to bring the surface level. Clean the face with a damp cloth as you go, because stone is far harder to clean once residue has cured.
VX-2 has a working time of about 15 to 20 minutes once mixed and reaches full strength in roughly 14 days, so plan batch sizes and traffic accordingly. The full sequence is on the laying instructions page.
Grouting and aftercare
Choose a grout shade that suits the stone rather than fighting it, and preview options on the joint filler visualizer.
For maintenance, never use an acidic cleaner on marble or other calcium-based stone. It etches the surface permanently. Use the non-acidic Gresbond Marble Cleaner, which is formulated for marble, granite and natural stone and removes oil, grease, wax, cement haze and limescale without damaging the polish or the grout.
Frequently Asked Questions
A white, polymer-modified adhesive rated for natural stone. VX-2 is Gresbond’s white grade for low-porosity tiles and stone, confirming to IS 15477:2019 Type 2T.
Usually a grey adhesive reading through a translucent slab, made worse by an uneven bed. A white adhesive and full bed contact prevent it.
No. VX-2 is not suitable for tiles and stones with mesh backing. Check the backing before selecting the adhesive.
With a non-acidic cleaner only. Acidic products etch marble permanently and the damage cannot be cleaned away.
